Judicial records from public sources · every grade cites its source · we never invent findings.

Methodology

How Wake the Bench assigns A / C / F grades and left–right record leans. FairPAC / Wake the Bench assessments — not official court labels. We never invent CJP findings or case holdings.

How grades work
Common-sense grade for judges (FairPAC / Wake the Bench). Not an official court label.
GradeMeaningWhen we use it
ACommon-sense recordSourced public-safety / parental-rights / anti-bureaucracy case-vote patterns (published opinions)
CMixed / thin recordInsufficient public evidence for A or F; explicit note required
FOut of touch on the basicsPublic CJP discipline/censure OR sourced progressive-bench signals with cites

A and F require cites; thin → C.

We never invent CJP findings or court holdings.

Composite labels
FairPAC / Wake the Bench assessment only — not an official court label. A / C / F are legacy aliases.
  • Aligned — Common-sense record. Cited public-safety / parental-rights / anti-bureaucracy patterns match FairPAC common-sense outcomes. Alias of legacy A.
  • Contested — Mixed record. Cited signals pull both ways. Alias of legacy C when mixed.
  • Misaligned — Out of touch on the basics. Public CJP discipline/censure OR sourced progressive-bench / restrictive-liberty + defendant-forward + agency-expansion patterns with cites. Alias of legacy F.
  • Thin — Not enough public cites yet. Researchable but unsourced — default until cites land. Alias of legacy C when thin.

Research status

Wake the Bench scores from public records only. We can determine grades when CJP public discipline, SOS retention/candidate lists, court rosters, published opinions, or loaded bar/JNE / election statements supply cites. Rows without a verified vote pattern or CJP attachment stay C with an explicit thin-record note and (usually) insufficient lean — researchable-but-not-yet-sourced, not a claim that the record is unknowable. We never invent holdings, CJP findings, ideology, or stats. This pack covers ballot/retention seats plus seeded Superior samples; California has many more Superior Court judges still to mine, and grades tighten as cites are verified.

Metric weights

Deep dive

Each judge profile Soft-includes an optional Deep dive block (background, education, prior professional work, advocacy / public roles, appointment / elevation). Status chips: Thin (Soft-empty scaffold), Partial (≥1 subsection with a public cite), Deep (≥4 subsections with cites). We paraphrase only from attached public primary sources (court bios, governor appointment releases, SOS lists, CJP decision PDFs). Missing fields show Not yet sourced — researchable. We never invent career history, advocacy, education, or appointment facts. Deep dive is FairPAC / Wake the Bench Soft research — not an official court label.

Default when evidence is thin

C with an explicit “insufficient public record” note. A and F require cited evidence.

Left–Right record lean

Field ideologyLean: left | center | right | insufficient. Derived only from documented case votes, sentencing/public-safety patterns, and similar sourced signals. Appointing governor is contextual, never sole proof. Thin evidence → insufficient (or center with a mixed-signal note). Always labeled as a FairPAC / Wake the Bench assessment.

Geography

Browse by county (Superior), appellate district (Court of Appeal), and statewide Supreme. County → appellate district mapping lives in data/counties.json and meta.geography.

Multi-state Soft

California is Ready — judges tagged state: "ca", courts from the real CA structure, grades cite-only from public records (array length is source of truth). Every other state is Soft: a cite-empty courts shell (Supreme / Appellate / Trial, or that state’s real names only when cited from a public SOS/court site) with judgesLoaded: 0. Soft empty is correct. We never invent non-CA judges, grades, CJP findings, holdings, or ideology. Thin → C. State picker swaps flag + Soft courts/roster for that state; ?state= and localStorage persist the choice.
